How to eat for your body type – the individualised diet plan for weight loss

We’ve all heard those alarming statistics. A whopping 63 percent of Australians are overweight or obese.

There’s no shortage of diets and eating plans: high fat/low carb, no sugar, gluten free, diet shakes, the soup diet, Paleo… the list goes on. Most of us have tried one or the other and haven’t succeeded. Or we have some lost a few kilos but eventually gained them back.

US doctor Elliot Abravanel developed the Body Type System more than 30 years ago to help his patients lose weight.

He noticed that what worked well for some patients didn’t work as well for others. He discovered that weight loss success with a diet plan was contingent on the patient following a program that suited their metabolism.

Dr Abravanel identified four basic body types based on the four major glands that control metabolism.

  • Thyroid
  • Adrenal
  • Gonadal (ovaries – women only)
  • Pituitary

Each of these glands produce hormones that affect your wellbeing. Dr Abravanel concluded that your dominant gland determines your body type. And each type requires a different diet to thrive.
